Cantey Hanger is Fort Worth's oldest law firm — founded in 1882 by William Capps and Samuel Benton Cantey when Fort Worth was still a frontier town. Today it occupies its landmark building, Cantey Hanger Plaza, on the west side of downtown. The firm represented Fort Worth's first electric utility (a 100+ year client) and helped bring the Stockyards to the city. Practice is full-service: business and corporate, commercial litigation, real estate, oil and gas, aviation and aerospace, environmental, labor and employment, tax, and estate planning.

Why Choose Cantey Hanger LLP?

Cantey Hanger is the institutional choice for Fort Worth families and businesses with multi-generational legal needs. The firm is mid-size by national standards — closer-in than Big Law, deeper than a boutique. Its strength is the boring stuff that matters most: real estate, business succession, oil and gas leasing, banking and lending, estate planning, complex commercial litigation. Hourly rates run higher than solo Fort Worth firms but well below Dallas Big Law. Best fit if you have a real estate transaction, a business succession plan, an aviation or aerospace matter, or commercial litigation that needs experienced trial counsel without paying Dallas Big Law rates.

What Clients Say

Client
Hugh B.
Family Business Sale · Tarrant County
★★★★★
Sold my third-generation Fort Worth manufacturing business. Cantey Hanger had represented my father since the 1980s. They knew the company's history and structure cold. Closed in 90 days at our target valuation.
Client
Margaret A.
Estate Plan · Westover Hills
★★★★★
Estate planning involving a ranch, mineral interests, and three kids. The team built a structure that protected the ranch in the family while equalizing inheritances. Took the time to actually explain trusts in plain English.
Client
James W.
Eminent Domain · TxDOT Right-of-Way
★★★★★
TxDOT wanted to take a corner of our commercial property for a road project. Cantey Hanger negotiated a settlement at four times the original offer. Real expertise in Texas eminent domain practice.

FAQ

Common Questions About This Firm

Does Cantey Hanger handle smaller business or estate matters?
Yes — though the firm is mid-size, it serves a wide range of clients from family businesses to public companies. Smaller engagements (single-event estate planning, small business formation, simple real-estate transactions) are accepted, but the rate structure is partner-led, so cost-conscious clients should compare with smaller-firm options.
What is the firm's approach to oil and gas matters?
Cantey Hanger has represented oil and gas operators and royalty owners for decades. The team handles leasing, title curative work, joint operating agreements, royalty disputes, and pipeline issues across Texas. Strong on Barnett Shale, Permian, and Eagle Ford matters.
Does the firm take Big Law-style M&A deals?
Yes. Cantey Hanger has handled middle-market mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures, especially in energy, manufacturing, and real estate. The firm's pricing is meaningfully below comparable Dallas-Houston Big Law for similar deal sizes.
What's special about Cantey Hanger Plaza?
The downtown Fort Worth building has been a city landmark for decades and houses the firm's main office. The building includes office space, conference facilities, and parking. Many of the firm's longtime Fort Worth clients have walked through that door for two or three generations.
How long has the firm been in Fort Worth?
Since 1882. The firm was founded the year after Fort Worth got its first electric utility — a client Cantey Hanger has continuously represented for over 100 years. The firm helped bring the Stockyards to Fort Worth and represented many of the city's earliest banks and ranches.
