If you can't work because of a medical condition, you may be entitled to Social Security disability benefits — but getting approved is harder than it should be. Most first applications are denied. Nash Disability Law has spent over four decades helping people in exactly this situation navigate the Social Security system, fight denials, and win the benefits they've earned. Founder Tom Nash opened the firm in 1989 and has built a team of attorneys and intake specialists who know the process from first application to federal court appeal.

Editorial Verdict

Why Choose Nash Disability Law?

Being unable to work because of illness or injury is already devastating — being denied the benefits you paid into makes it worse. Nash Disability Law has spent over 35 years doing one thing: helping disabled people in Illinois get Social Security benefits. That singular focus matters. The firm knows which medical evidence the Social Security Administration looks for, which arguments succeed at ALJ hearings, and how to build an appeal when the system has wrongly said no. Tom Nash has assembled a team with multiple attorneys and dedicated intake and case managers, so your case gets handled with structure and attention at every stage. The contingency fee arrangement means there's no financial barrier to getting help regardless of your current income.

FAQ

Common Questions About This Firm

My disability claim was denied. Is it too late to get help?
No — but time matters. After each denial you have 60 days to appeal (plus 5 days for mailing). Missing that deadline can mean starting over from scratch, which adds years to your case. Contact Nash Disability Law as soon as you receive a denial notice. They can review your situation and advise you on the fastest path forward.
What conditions qualify for Social Security disability?
Social Security disability does not have a fixed list of qualifying conditions. Instead, the SSA evaluates whether your condition — whether physical or mental — prevents you from performing any substantial gainful work you were previously capable of, or work you could reasonably be trained to do. Nash Disability Law handles cases involving back problems, heart conditions, cancer, diabetes, depression, anxiety, PTSD, fibromyalgia, and many other conditions.
How long does a disability case take?
Initial applications take 3–6 months. If denied, reconsideration takes another 3–5 months. An ALJ hearing typically takes 12–18 months from request to hearing. The total process can take 2–3 years from first application in contested cases. Nash Disability Law pursues every stage as efficiently as possible and keeps clients informed throughout.
What is back pay and will I receive any?
If your disability claim is approved after a long appeals process, Social Security typically pays "back pay" — benefits owed from your onset date (the date you became disabled) through the date of approval. This can be a substantial lump sum. Nash Disability Law's fee comes from this back pay, not from your monthly ongoing benefits.
Can Nash help me if I live outside Chicago?
Yes. The firm serves clients throughout Illinois from its Chicago office, and handles cases in multiple hearing offices across the state. Initial consultations are available by phone, and much of the case work can be handled remotely.
